Multiplay is a managed game server hosting platform, part of Rocket Science Group. The original team runs it still, independent from the Unity hosting service that wound down.
Three decades of game server hosting. We started inside a gaming festival, grew into hosting at scale, built the orchestration and the hybrid model the platform runs on today, and carried hundreds of launches through. The team came through the Unity years and out the other side, and now runs Multiplay independently as part of Rocket Science Group.
Where it started
Multiplay began providing dedicated game servers to studios who needed reliable hosting without the overhead of managing hardware themselves. The model was simple, the demand was real, and the problems were already complex.
Games got bigger. The infrastructure had to match.
Multiplayer games kept getting bigger, with more players online at once, audiences spread across every region, and far less tolerance for downtime than studios had ever had to plan for. Multiplay built the orchestration layer to match that new scale, and over time automated scaling, zero-downtime patching, and global monitoring became standard parts of what we offered.
The hybrid model
We pioneered the approach of blending dedicated servers with cloud capacity by using dedicated hardware for the predictable everyday load, and cloud to absorb the peaks. The result was significantly lower cost without sacrificing the ability to scale. It remains the foundation of how we host games today.
Scaling the unscalable
A major free-to-play title launched without prior announcement and reached tens of millions of players within weeks. Predictions were off by an order of magnitude. The platform scaled to meet demand automatically, without manual intervention, and without a single player being turned away for lack of capacity.
Part of Unity Technologies
Multiplay operated as part of Unity Technologies for several years, expanding the platform's reach and infrastructure. The operational heritage deepened, the team grew, and the platform continued to evolve.
Acquired by Rocket Science Group
Rocket Science Group, a company founded by Multiplay veterans, including the engineer behind the original platform code, acquired Multiplay at the end of 2025. This wasn't an outside acquisition. It was the people who spent years building, running, and deeply understanding the platform deciding to own it outright. Independent, focused, and led by the people who know it better than anyone.
"We didn't acquire Multiplay to change it. We acquired it because we knew exactly what it was, and we believed in it enough to own it."
